HYDERABAD: About 1,000 people, mostly students and staff of Maulana Azad National Urdu University (Manuu) participated in a march against sexual harassment on Wednesday to mark completion of a month of the brutal Delhi gang-rape incident that sparked nation- wide protests and forced the government to tweak laws on protection of women. More than 500 people comprising students, teaching faculty and non-teaching staff members of Manuu started the rally at around 4pm from the languages building on campus. The group then moved around the campus and more people from the various buildings joined in and the crowd swelled to nearly 1,000. The rally then moved outside the campus and participants proceeded to form a human chain as a mark of solidarity with the 23-year-old Nirbhaya, who succumbed to injuries last month in a Singapore hospital. The event culminated with a candlelight vigil in memory of the physiotherapy student. Participants shouted slogans and carried banners and placards conveying messages like 'Aurat ki izzat, mulk ki izzat' (Women's dignity is the nation's dignity) and 'Go without fear-Nirbhaya'. At the rally, which was called 'March for human dignity', many students wore black as a sign of protest against gender discrimination and sexual violence. "Such events are necessary to keep the spark alive among the people. This cause needs attention and through this event we demand death penalty for the accused in the Delhi rape case," said Shahida Murtaza, faculty member and chairperson of the committee against sexual harassment, Manuu. She further added that they were also planning a sensitisation programme in the university next month which may invite participants from other city colleges too.

MIM organ Urdu Daily Etemaad had done a story on 23-02-12 apparently to expose Anti-Muslim VC of MANUU. Manuu VC wife is hindu, he also spoke against islam on the topic of ‘veil [pardah] in islam’ in a function which was organised at salarjung museum hyderabad on 19-01-12. VC also displayed his Anti-Muslim mentality when he organised a film festival on milad un nabi [sas] last year on the Maulana Azad National Urdu University Campus. On 23-02-12 the VC and his team had appointed a committee to review his decision after etemaad urdu daily exposed the VC, but as every one knows these are old tricks to put demands in cold storage and escape anger from the agitators.
